Packwaukee
Origin of Packwaukee, Wisconsin
Named after a friendly chief of the Ho-Chunk tribe. Thin land, "pakwa we," meaning "it is shallow." (Potawatomi) In Chippewa, this means Bagwaging, where the water is shallow, forming a slough. Corrupt of Bagwaki, meaning "Forest Opening." Bug-wau-keeng, meaning "thin land" or "land with thin woods," or a contraction from buh-bugh-wa-keeng, meaning "a land with perforated woods like our oak openings."
