pharmacist, chemist, professor, b. Hudson, N.Y. He studied pharmacy under Edward Parrish in Philadelphia, graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (1874), and the Univ. of Strassburg, Germany (Ph.D., 1880). Returning to the U.S. in 1880, he was professor of analytical chemistry at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (1880-1883). In 1883 he came to the Univ. of Wisconsin to organize and head the new department of pharmacy, the second state College of Pharmacy in the U.S. Under Power's leadership, the pharmacy school was established on a sound basis and gained a nationwide reputation. Resigning his position at Wisconsin in 1892, Power did research for various eastern laboratories (1892-1896), and in 1896 went to London, where he was director of the Wellcome Chemical Research Laboratories (1896-1914). While in London, Power did important research on chaulmoogra oil, derivatives of which were later used in the treatment of leprosy. Returning to the U.S. in 1914, Power was director of the Phylochemical Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., from 1916 until his death. Dict. Amer.
