lumberman, lawyer, businessman, politician, Congressman, b. Barre Township, Huntingdon County, Pa. He moved to Wisconsin in 1845, settling in Black River Falls, where he entered the lumber business. He also read law, and in 1852 was admitted to the bar, practicing in Black River Falls from 1854 to 1859. Price was active in the transportation business, and for several years operated stagecoach lines between La Crosse and Black River Falls and between Sparta and St. Paul, Minn. He was instrumental in promoting early railroads in the area, and was also active in flour milling, agriculture, and real estate, owning large tracts of timber in the Black and Chippewa river valleys. A Democrat, he was state assemblyman (1851), later joined the Republican party, and was state senator (1857, 1870-1871, 1878-1881). He was again state assemblyman in 1882. In 1882 he was elected to Congress, was re-elected in 1884, and served from Mar., 1883, until his death. His son, HUGH HIRAM PRICE, b. Black River Falls, attended the Univ. of Wisconsin, and on his father's death was elected to fill his unexpired term in the 49th Congress, serving from Jan. to Mar., 1887. Returning to Black River Falls in 1887, he engaged in milling, lumbering, and farming. He was state senator (1889-1892). Price died in Denver, Colo. Biog. Dir. Amer. Cong. (1928); Wis.
