Educated Superior public schools; in 1930 received B.E. from Superior State College; in 1932 M.A. from Columbia University; holds honorary LL.D. from Carroll College and honorary M.A. from Lawrence College. Was school administrator and author; elementary school principal, Wausau, 1926-1934; high school principal and curriculum supervisor, Superior, 1934-41; superintendent of schools, Superior 1941-49, and Manitowoc 1949-61. Veteran of World War II, served in Navy 1943-46. Board member of Council of Chief State School Officers; member Phi Delta Kappa, American Association of School Administrators; member of national and past president of state and local education assns.; past president of Rotary; member of Masonic orders, of Izaak Walton League. Served on Superior and Manitowoc boards for vocational and adult education, and for libraries. Wisconsin representative to 1955 and 1965 White House Conferences on Education. Member Governor's Retirement Study Commission 1958-59. Elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction April 1961 and re-elected 1965. Ex officio member Board of Regents of the Univ. of Wis., Board of Regents of State Colleges, State Board of Vocational, Technical and Adult Education, Coordinating Corn. for Higher Educ.
