Sanford, Albert Hart 1866 - 1956
teacher, historian, author, b. Platteville. He graduated from Platteville State Normal School (1886), taught school for several years, and graduated from the Univ. of Wisconsin (B. Litt., 1891) and Harvard Univ. (A.M., 1894). From 1894 to 1909 Sanford taught history and civics at Stevens Point State Normal School, and from 1909 until his retirement in 1936 was a member of the faculty of La Crosse State Normal School (State College after 1928). He was co-author of several high school history and civics textbooks, joint author of A History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin, 1841-1900 (1951), and author of a history of American Agriculture, as well as numerous historical articles. He was a founder (1925) and president (1925-1947), of the La Crosse County Historical Society, and president of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (1939-1940). After retiring from his teaching post, he continued to make his home in La Crosse until his death.
