Dictionary of Wisconsin History.

The village site was originally named Harszthy for Count Augustin Harszthy, who platted it in 1840. As this name was difficult to remember, it was changed to Westfield. The area was originally known as Sauk Prairie from the Sauk Indians, and as it was popular at that time, it was decided to rename it Sauk City.
