brewer, b. Obermarchel, Bavaria. He migrated to the U.S. in 1856, settling in Philadelphia. After working in various cities, he moved to Wisconsin in 1863, settling in Watertown. In 1866 he married Elizabetha Best, the daughter of Philip Best (q.v.), moved to Milwaukee, and there became a partner with Frederick Pabst (q.v.) in operating the Best Brewing Co. He was vice-president of the Philip Best Brewing Co. from its incorporation in 1873 until his death, at which time his widow assumed his office. Schandein was one of the founders and first president of the Milwaukee Deutsche Gesellschaft (1880), a director of the Northwestern Life Insurance Co. and the Second Ward Savings Bank, and president of the Milwaukee Brewers Association.
