Schmidt, Carl Henry 1835 - 1888 | Wisconsin Historical Society
newspaperman, politician, b. Westphalia, Germany. He migrated to the U.S. and to Wisconsin in 1854, settling in Manitowoc, where in 1855 he established the Democratic German- language newspaper Nord-Westen. Except for the paper's suspension during Schmidt's service in the Civil War, he edited it until his death. A Democrat, Schmidt held local political offices in Manitowoc, and was state assemblyman (1870) and state senator (1871-1874). His younger brother, CARL GOTTLIEB SCHMIDT, b. Westphalia, Germany, migrated to the U.S. in 1865, settling in Chicago. He served briefly in the Civil War, and about 1878 moved to Madison, where he was co-founder of the Wis. Staats-Zeitung. He was editor and publisher of this newspaper (1882-1885), continued as editor (1885-1888), and, when Carl H. Schmidt died in 1888, moved to Manitowoc; there he was editor and publisher of the Nord-Westen until its discontinuance in 1910. He was later associated with the Manitowoc Post until his death.
