newspaperman, politician, b. Ann Arbor, Mich. He moved to Wisconsin in 1857, and gained his newspaper experience by working on various newspapers, including the Dodge County Citizen, the Milwaukee News, and the Madison Argus. In 1862 he settled in Beaver Dam, and in 1863, with a partner, purchased the Beaver Dam Argus. Sherman was editor of this weekly newspaper with various partners from 1863 until his death. A Democrat, he held local political offices, was state assemblyman (1880), state senator (1883-1886), and was a presidential elector in 1906. From 1896 to 1900 he was postmaster of Beaver Dam. H. B.
