professor, politician, b. South Hadley, Mass. He graduated from Amherst College (A.B., 1877; A.M., 1880) and the Univ. of Gottingen, Germany (Ph.D., 1883). In 1881 Smith was appointed professor of chemistry at Beloit College, serving in this capacity until his retirement to emeritus status in 1921. A Republican, he held local political offices in Beloit, was several times mayor, and was state assemblyman (1927-1932). He was the author of the law creating the Wisconsin Orthopedic Hospital in Madison, and from 1914 to 1928 was president of the Beloit Savings Bank. R. B.
