Smith, Hiram 1829 - 1900 | Wisconsin Historical Society
businessman, b. Otsego County, N.Y. He moved to Wisconsin in 1854, settling in Neenah where he went into the mercantile business with his brother. He was one of the founders (1865-1866) of the stock company that constructed the first paper mill in Neenah. Three years later he rented the mill from the company. Later he and his partner, D. C. Van Ostrand, became owners of the mill and operated it until it was sold to Kimberly, Clark and Co. in 1874. He was prominent in other Neenah business enterprises and was a founder of the Manufacturer's Bank of Neenah (1881), serving as its president until his death. Menasha Evening Breeze, Jan. 5, 1900; P.
