The present W. Wisconsin Ave. was formerly called Spring Street because so many springs welled up in the roadway. Later it was called Grand Ave. to match Milwaukee's ambitions, but was changed to W. Wisconsin Ave. because it connected with the old Wisconsin St. of the East side.
