Stambaugh, Samuel C. | Wisconsin Historical Society
Stambaugh served as Indian Agent at Green Bay 1830-1832. He negotiated the Treaty of Feb. 8, 1831 and led two companies of Menominee against the Sauk/Fox during the Black Hawk War. Later he served as secretary for a commission dealing with the Cherokee in Arkansas. He was the first postmaster for St. Paul, Minn., and was also suttler for Fort Snelling. Stambaugh was a friend of James Buchanan who appointed him Surveyor General of Utah Terr. in 1859, a post he held until his death in 1860.
