newspaperman, soldier, b. Rochester, N.Y. He moved to Buffalo, N.Y., in 1849, learned the printer's trade there, and in 1856 proceeded west to Romeo, Mich., where he served briefly as editor of the Romeo Argus. In 1857 he moved to Wisconsin, settling in Manitowoc, where for one year he was co-publisher of the Manitowoc Weekly Tribune; in 1859 he established the Calumet Republican in Gravesville and was its editor until 1861. During the Civil War, Stone served as captain, Co. G, 19th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (Feb. 1862-June 1863). Resigning his commission in 1863, he returned to Wisconsin, established the Island City Times (Neenah-Menasha), and edited this paper from 1863 to 1870. Beginning in 1870, Stone published the Appleton City Times for an indefinite period, and in 1875 returned to Neenah where he was editor and publisher of the Neenah Times from 1875 to 1918, when ownership of the paper was transferred to the Times Publishing Co. A Democrat, Stone held local political offices in Neenah, and was several times its mayor.
