lumberman, b. Ringoes, N.J. He settled in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1836, and in 1853 became a partner in the lumber firm of Knapp, Stout and Co. of Menomonie, Wis. Although Stout himself never was a resident of Wisconsin, spending his life in Dubuque where he handled the company's yards and offices on the Mississippi River, he was an important figure in Wisconsin lumbering. The partnership was incorporated in 1878 as The Knapp, Stout and Co. Lumber Co. and eventually achieved virtual domination of the lumber industry on Wisconsin's Red Cedar River and its tributaries, and owned mills and yards in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Missouri. Stout's son, James Huff Stout (q.v.), who moved to Menomonie in 1889, became an important figure in Wisconsin lumbering, politics, and education. Amer. Lumberman, July 21, 1900; H. E. Knapp Papers.
