Strong, Henry Partridge 1832 - 1883 | Wisconsin Historical Society

(Note: birth date given in original as "ca. 1780.") physician, politician, b. Brownington, Vt. He graduated from Castleton, Vt., Medical College (M.D., 1853), and shortly after his graduation moved to Wisconsin, settling in Beloit where he set up a medical practice. During the Civil War, Strong served as surgeon, 11th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (1861-1863), and was later promoted to surgeon-in-chief, 14th Division of the 13th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee. Following the war, he returned to his practice in Beloit, and also became prominent in local politics. A Republican, he served several terms as mayor of Beloit, and was its postmaster (1870-1883). Strong was also active in the Wisconsin State Medical Society, served as its president (1870), and from 1876 until his death was a member of the Wisconsin state board of health. U.S. Biog. Dict....
