Talon, Jean, comte d'Orsainville (c.1625-1694)
intendant (q.v.) of New France twice, 1665-1668 and 1670-1672. By encouraging settlement, agriculture, industry, trade, and mining (including copper mining on Lake Superior), he ensured the viability and stability of New France while also maintaining a fragile peace with the Iroquois. Returning to France he became secretary to the King. He is considered a major figure in the history of Canada.
