Important fur trading post founded by Laviolette (agent for Samuel de Champlain) in 1634 at the confluence of Saint-Maurice River and the St Lawrence, bewtween Montreal and Quebec. The site was already in use as an important meeting place for Algonkian Indians. The Iroquois attacked the fort for long periods from its founding until the onset of King William's War. It is now a thriving city of 50,000 noted for its paper and lumber industry and the site of the University du Québec at Trois-Rivières.
