(Rep.), born on farm in Wisconsin Jan. 25, 1897. Orphaned, he left school at 8th grade, and worked as farm hand, construction laborer, building trades worker, realtor, lawyer and builder. In 1931 entered University of 'Wisconsin as an adult special, and achieved the record of going from 6th grade to a bachelor's degree in 4 years. In 1937, at age 40, graduated from University of Wisconsin Law School. Served as president of Walworth County Bar Association and state commander of American Legion, 1945- 46. World War I veteran, having served in France 32nd (Red Arrow) Division. Nominated to fill vacancy caused by death of Senator Shearer on Oct. 8, 1948. This is his 3rd term in the senate.
