university professor, dean of the college of engineering, b. on a farm near Freeport, Ill. He graduated from Cornell Univ. (C.E., 1889), and from 1890 to 1892 taught at Washington Univ. in St. Louis, Mo. In 1892 he came to the Univ. of Wisconsin as professor of bridge and hydraulic engineering, was made acting dean of the engineering school in 1902, and in 1904 became Dean of the College of Mechanics and Engineering, serving in this capacity until his retirement in 1937. Widely known as an authority on bridge construction and structural engineering, Turneaure was the author or co-author of several engineering texts and technical monographs. He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society of Civil Engineers, as well as many other professional and honorary organizations. Turneaure also served for many years as a member of the Wisconsin State Highway Commission, and for a time was city engineer of Madison. After his retirement to the status of emeritus dean in 1937, he continued to make his home in Madison until his death. M. Curti and V. Carstensen, Univ. of Wis. (2 vols., Madison, 1949); M. M.
