paper manufacturer, philanthropist, b. Elyria, Ohio. A paper jobber, for a number of years he sold fruit wrappers to California growers, utilizing Oscar Thilmany's paper mill at Kaukauna as his chief source of supply. In 1901 Wertheimer formed a group to purchase the mill and moved to Kaukauna. The plant was incorporated as the Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co., and soon began to manufacture kraft paper, paper bags, waxed papers, and other specialties. Wertheimer was president of this firm (1901-1936), and was chairman of the board from 1936 until his death. He was also the initiator and president of the Longview Fibre Co., Longview, Wash., a founder and early trustee of the Institute for Paper Chemistry at Appleton (established 1929), and a trustee of Lawrence College.
