Werwath, Oscar 1880 - 1948 | Wisconsin Historical Society
engineer, educator, b. Stalluponen, East Prussia. He graduated with degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering from technical schools in Mittweida, Saxony, and also attended the universities in Hannover and Dormstadt. In 1903 he migrated to the U.S. and to Milwaukee, and in the same year founded the Milwaukee School of Engineering, one of the first technical institutions of its kind in the U.S. Werwath was president of this institution from 1903 until his death, and made the school a leader in the system of co-operative education, incorporating academic study with on-the-job training. Through the school, Werwath was also instrumental in founding radio station WIOA, which later became CBS network station WISN in Milwaukee. F. L. Holmes, et al., eds., Wis.
