Early Life

Charles Grandison Williams was a lawyer, politician and Congressman born in Royalton, NY. He attended Genesee Wesleyan Seminary in Lima, NY and studied law in Rochester. In 1856 he moved to Wisconsin and settled in Janesville, where he was admitted to the bar and set up a law practice.

Political Career

Williams was a Republican state senator (1869-1872). In 1872 he was elected to Congress, was four times re-elected and served from March of 1873 to March of 1883.

Late Life

Williams moved to Watertown, SD in 1883 after he was defeated for re-election in 1882. Here he was appointed register of the federal land office and practiced law until his death.
