Martin Phillip Winther became a automobile manufacturer after being apprenticed as a teenager in the Thomas B. Jeffery Company. In December 1916 Winther incorporated his own business in Kenosha, the Winther Motor and Truck Company. For the next decade his firm manufactured cars, trucks and fire engines for national and international markets. In 1927 Winther sold the company, and was president of various engineering firms from 1932 until 1956. He died March 18, 1982, in Clermont, Florida.
