Early Life

Fritz Wilhelm Woll was a professor, agricultural chemist and author born in Bergen, Norway. He graduated from the Royal Frederick's University in Christiana, Norway  with a BS in 1882 and a PhD in 1883. After Woll migrated to Wisconsin in 1885, he settled in Madison and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a MS in 1886 and PhD in 1904.

Accomplishments

From 1886 to 1913 he taught agricultural chemistry and laboratory techniques at the university, and was attached to the University of Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station after 1886. In this capacity he was associated with Stephen Babcock in helping to develop the Babcock butterfat test, and also worked with William A. Henry in investigating the effects of proteins and minerals on the growth of farm stock. Woll's own research dealt primarily with the effects of silage, dairy byproducts and other materials in feeding stock. He was the author of several handbooks and textbooks on these subjects. In 1913 he left Wisconsin, and from 1913 until his death was professor of animal nutrition at the University of California.
