Joseph Wolter (1857 - 1929)
Shipbuilder and Businessman
Early Life & Career
Joseph Wolter was a shipbuilder and businessman born in Milwaukee, where he learned the shipbuilding trade in the Wolf and Davidson shipyards. He moved to Sheboygan where he established a shipyard in partnership with August Rieboldt in 1885.
Accomplishments
In 1896 Rieboldt, Wolter and Company moved to Sturgeon Bay, where it became one of the leading industries in the city. Wolter also established the Wisconsin Dredge and Dock Company of Sheboygan in 1890 and was its president until his death.
He was vice-president of the Bank of Sturgeon Bay, and was mayor of that city for several years.
