Green Bay Downtown Historic District Placed on the State Register of Historic Places

Green Bay, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society placed the Green Bay Downtown Historic District (Green Bay, Brown County) on the State Register of Historic Places on February 16, 2018.

The Green Bay Downtown Historic District coincides with the historic core of Green Bay, the heart of civic, social and commercial expansion, and reflects the period of development and growth from 1870 through 1969.  The district exemplifies the historic development of the city and contains a sizable and important collection of buildings related to regional government, social institutions, entertainment, and commerce.  The district also has a strong collection of buildings representing many of the popular architectural styles of various periods.  The Beaux Arts style courthouse and the Neoclassical style library are among the buildings that anchor the district in the distinctive styles popular for public institutions.  The examples of Tudor Revival, Mediterranean Revival, and Art Deco styles reflect a more lighthearted and exuberant approach to social and commercial architecture.  The historic district, with its cohesive collection of buildings, served and continues to serve as the nucleus of civic, social and commercial activity in Green Bay.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
