The St. Norbert College Historic District Listed in National Register of Historic Places

De Pere, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society has announced the listing of the St. Norbert College Historic District in De Pere, Brown County, in the National Register of Historic Places. National Register designation provides access to certain benefits, including qualification for grants and for rehabilitation income tax credits, while it does not restrict private property owners in the use of their property.

The St. Norbert College Historic District is the concentrated historic core of the St. Norbert campus, with buildings constructed between 1890 and 1963.  The district represents various styles including the High Victorian Gothic, Richardson Romanesque, Neoclassical Revival and the Contemporary style.  St. Norbert College has a rich history related to both education and religious history: from the time it was founded in 1898 until 1964, when the nearby UW-Green Bay campus was established, St. Norbert College was the only degree-granting institution of higher learning in the northeastern part of Wisconsin and as such it played an important role in providing college-level educational opportunities.  St. Norbert College was also home to the St. Norbert Priory, later the St. Norbert Abbey, the permanent home of the Norbertine Order in the United States, a religious order founded in northeastern France in 1120.

The register is the official national list of historic properties in America deemed worthy of preservation and is maintained by the National Park Service in the U.S. Department of the Interior. The Wisconsin Historical Society administers the program within Wisconsin. It includes sites, buildings, structures, objects and districts that are significant in national, state or local history, architecture, archaeology, engineering or culture.
