St. Mary of the Angels Church and Monastery Listed in National Register of Historic Places

Green Bay, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society has announced the listing of the St. Mary of the Angels Church and Monastery in Green Bay, Brown County, in the National Register of Historic Places. National Register designation provides access to certain benefits, including qualification for grants and for rehabilitation income tax credits, while it does not restrict private property owners in the use of their property.

The St. Mary of the Angels church and its attached monastery was designed by architect William E. Reynolds and completed in 1903. The building was erected by the parish of St. Mary of the Angels in partnership with the Polish Franciscan Fathers, and represents the successful establishment of a Polish Catholic Church in Green Bay following a thirty-year struggle by the community to gain sufficient financial stability to maintain a parish distinct from the German Catholic parishes in the vicinity.

St. Mary of the Angels Church and Monastery is as an excellent and distinct example of the Gothic Revival style of architecture designed by prominent local architect, William E. Reynolds. The building displays a unique interpretation of the Gothic Revival style through its incorporation of Gothic forms in a simplified heavy composition with rounded-arch entryways and rough-hewn stone walls.

The register is the official national list of historic properties in America deemed worthy of preservation and is maintained by the National Park Service in the U.S. Department of the Interior. The Wisconsin Historical Society administers the program within Wisconsin. It includes sites, buildings, structures, objects and districts that are significant in national, state or local history, architecture, archaeology, engineering or culture.
