Highland Park Historic District Listed on the State Register of Histor | Wisconsin Historical Society

Wausau, WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Highland Park Historic District, Wausau, Marathon County, on the State Register of Historic Places.

Consisting of 43 homes, the Highland Park Historic District includes a distinctive collection of homes constructed between the 1920s and the 1970s. The district is named after the subdivision in which the majority of the houses are located. The terrain is steep and is known as East Hill. Platted in 1925, the Highland Park subdivision is made up of streets that cross through the terrain and that are laid out in modestly curvilinear, boulevard roadways lined with trees and ornamental street lights.

Architectural styles found in the Highland Park Historic District represent a cross section of styles that were popular in Wisconsin for nearly five decades. This cross section includes homes completed in the Prairie School, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Mediterranean Revival, and Spanish Eclectic. As well as a concentration of more “Modern” styled residences, including examples completed in the International Style, Usonian, 1950s and 1960s Contemporary examples, and custom-built Ranch homes are also found in the district. All of these homes generally range from one to two stories, many of which include exposed basement levels, and have either integrated or detached garages.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
