West Salem, WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Derwood and Myrtle Trimbell House in West Salem, La Crosse County, in the National Register of Historic Places. 

The Derwood and Myrtle Trimbell House is an outstanding Prairie style house in West Salem. The house was built in 1920 and features a wide, low roofline, leaded glass windows, and an exterior of clay tiles laid to form horizontal bands of alternating widths. The interior is richly detailed with wood flooring and trim, plaster walls, and a monumental decorative fireplace.

Derwood and Myrtle Trimbell were active in social, academic, and fraternal clubs in West Salem as well as several businesses in the area including the West Salem Nonpareil Journal, the Badger Publishing Company, the Consumers’ Ice Company, and the West Salem Canning Company.

The Trimbell House represents the work of local architects Percy Dwight Bentley and Otto Merman. Bentley and Merman designed several inventive and sophisticated houses in the La Crosse area. Their work was heavily influenced by the Prairie School architects centered in the Chicago area in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The National Register is the official list of historic properties in America deemed worthy of preservation and is maintained by the National Park Service in the U.S. Department of the Interior. The Wisconsin Historical Society administers the program within Wisconsin. It includes sites, buildings, structures, objects and districts that are significant in national, state or local history, architecture, archaeology, engineering or culture.
