La Crosse, La Crosse County WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Caledonia Street Commercial Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places on November 14, 2022.

The Caledonia Street Commercial Historic District is significant for its collection of commercial buildings and represents a wide range of design influences over an 80-year period from 1883 to 1963. The historic district consists of a single contiguous block of masonry buildings that present a dense historic streetscape. It has the largest concentration of commercial buildings with architectural integrity on the north side of La Crosse.

The buildings were occupied by a variety of thriving businesses including dry goods stores, groceries, barbers, theaters, restaurants, taverns and pharmacies, with office space and apartments occupying second story spaces. It developed as a satellite commercial district to serve the immediate needs of people on the north side, in contrast to the larger commercial downtown district. To this day, the district remains the neighborhood’s principal commercial zone.
