Edward and Mary Davies House Listed on the State Register of Historic Places
For Immediate Release (March 27, 2023)
Platteville, WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Edward and Mary Davies House in Platteville (Grant County) on the State Register of Historic Places.
The Davies House was constructed in 1864 for Welsh-born blacksmith Edward Davies and his family. The house was built of locally produced red brick in a “gabled ell” vernacular form. The exterior and interior have undergone few substantial alterations in more than 150 years, making the Davies House one of the most intact mid-nineteenth-century vernacular brick houses remaining in Platteville.
Although modest in size and style, the house has distinct references to the Greek Revival style that had become popular in Wisconsin by the middle of the nineteenth century. They include the balanced composition of its primary façade and the squared wood columns with Doric capitals in the front porch.
The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
This property is private. Please respect the rights and privacy of the owners.
