Mount Horeb, Wisconsin - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Gonstead Clinic of Chiropractic in the National Register of Historic Places on April 7, 2023.

The Gonstead Clinic of Chiropractic has been listed for its association with Dr. Clarence S. Gonstead. A practitioner in Mount Horeb, Gonstead was one of the most influential figures in the American chiropractic profession during his lifetime. He developed clinical techniques that still influence the profession today and would see hundreds of patients a day at the clinic, with clients flying to his private airstrip and staying at a hotel on the original property. Today, Gonstead’s method is practiced in all accredited chiropractic colleges and is a top method used nationwide.

The Gonstead Clinic of Chiropractic was constructed in 1964 and designed by prominent Monticello, Wisconsin architect John W. Steinmann in the Contemporary style. The 19,000 square foot building has a Y-shaped plan that from the air reveals an abstract representation of the human spine. The building features a complex multi-gable roof with overhanging eaves and decorative panels on the exterior, while wood-paneled walls and decorative concrete blocks adorn the interior. The clinic holds offices, adjusting rooms, dressing rooms, and specialized clinical spaces; it also continues to hold workshops on Gonstead’s method. Today, the property is operated by the Gonstead Clinic of Chiropractic and open to the public.
