Jackson, Wisconsin - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Wilhelm Tischer Blacksmith Shop in the National Register of Historic Places on April 14, 2023.

Constructed in 1870, the blacksmith shop was operated within the same family until 1976. The shop was established by Wilhelm Tischer Senior as one of the first blacksmith shops in the community. He would produce and repair fences, carriages, wagons, farm equipment, and shod horses for the surrounding agricultural community. Tischer passed his expertise to his soon, Wilhelm Tischer Junior, and then to his brother-in-law Bruno Woldt, who began as an apprentice at the shop as a teenager. As carriages declined in popularity, the upper rooms were rented for events. By 1976, it was the last blacksmith shops in the area.

Designed in the Boomtown style, it is an excellent example of a rare property type and style that was prevalent at the time of construction along commercial centers. The two-story building features wood siding, a false front, a large central entrance to work on carriages and wagons, modest wood elements, and double-hung windows. The shop is privately owned; please respect their privacy.
