Minocqua, Oneida County, WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Texaco Service Station on the State Register of Historic Places.

The Texaco Service Station is an intact example of a late 1930s-era gas station. It was designed during a transitional period from the “house with bays”-type service station of the 1920s to the more streamlined, modern oblong box of the 1930s. The architectural plans appear to have been supplied by The Texas Company (later known as Texaco), constructed with hollow tile that was faced with stucco. It was remodeled circa 1939 with the brick exterior that is seen today. The building continues to maintain its original overall plan, door and window openings with their corresponding wood doors and wood-frame windows, as well as its overall brick exterior, complete with two rows of decorative green brick belt courses that span the full perimeter of the building.

While historic gas stations exist throughout Wisconsin, they are considered a disappearing resource. Following a review of historic gas stations known to exist in Oneida County, the subject Texaco Service Station, which operated as a service station until 1960, stands as a rare intact property type during this period.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
