Rock Art Site (Location Restricted) Listed on the State Register of Hi | Wisconsin Historical Society

Trempealeau County, WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of a rock art site in Trempealeau County on the State Register of Historic Places. The location and the name of the owner are being kept restricted in order to help protect this important and fragile location, and out of respect for the sensitive nature of the cultural heritage site.

The rock art site is a complex of rockshelters containing carved images of deer and abstract symbols. It is believed to date to the period between 500 BC and AD 1200. It is significant in the areas of prehistoric archaeology, religion, and art for its ability to address important questions about the Native peoples who visited and created the art, and as a representative of Native American art styles.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and the National Register in Wisconsin.
