Gottlieb and Beata Stanelle Farmhouse Listed on the State Register of Historic Places
For Immediate Release (September 8, 2023)
Town of Brilllion, WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Gottlieb and Beata Stanelle Farmhouse in the Town of Brillion, Calumet County, on the State Register of Historic Places. The Stanelle Farmhouse is located about six miles northwest of the city of Brillion. State Historic Preservation Officer Daina Penkiunas presents a certificate to Jim and Nancy Stanelle.
The Stanelle Farmhouse, completed in 1887, is an excellent and intact example of Italianate residential design with a two-story main block and one-story side wing. Both sections are finished with clapboards or with composition wood siding that replicates the original. The house has many characteristics of the Italianate style: a square cupola crowns the main block, beveled square posts support the front porches, sidelights and transom windows frame the front door, and scrolled brackets support the broad eaves.
Johann Gottlieb Stanelle and Johanna Beata (Franzke) Stanelle were both born in Silesia, then a part of Prussian Germany. They married in 1859, emigrated to the U.S. in 1862, and purchased 80 acres in Brillion Township in 1865. Gottlieb Stanelle was hailed as a “progressive” farmer who employed up-to-date scientific farming methods and shared what he learned to benefit his neighbors. Stanelle was a successful and prosperous farmer, as his high-style Italianate house attests.
The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and the National Register in Wisconsin.
