WAUSAU, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of Zion Lutheran Church in Wausau on the State Register of Historic Places. The church is located on North Sixth Street in Wausau.

Zion Lutheran Church was built in 1953 and is clad in Stevens Point sandstone and Indiana limestone. It shows hallmarks of the Late Gothic Revival style including steeply-pitched roofs, pointed-arch windows and doors and modest buttresses. The windows feature brightly colored stained glass created by noted craftsman Erhard Stoettner of the T.C. Esser Company of Milwaukee. The interior has handmade ceramic floor tile, wooden roof trusses, wooden ceiling beams and a significant amount of original wooden church furniture produced by the Ossit Church Furniture Company of Janesville, Wisconsin.

Zion Lutheran Church was identified through a 2017-2018 intensive survey of historical and architectural resources in Wausau that was funded by the National Park Service. Zion Lutheran is the last-built example of the Late Gothic Revival style in the city.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and the National Register in Wisconsin.
