ELCHO, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Modern Woodmen of America Lodge in the Town of Elcho (Langlade County) on the State Register of Historic Places. The State Historic Preservation Office presented the certificate to consultant Paula Mohr.

The one-story wood-frame building was constructed in 1913 as the Elcho Lodge for the Modern Woodmen of America. From 1932 to 1966, it was used by the Elcho Grange for their meeting hall. A private business then used the space until 2019 when the owner donated it to the Elcho Historical Society, which is preserving the building to be used as a local history museum.

The building represents the important role that the Modern Woodmen, a fraternal benefit society, and the Grange, a social organization, played in the social history of Elcho and the surrounding area. Both organizations held their meetings in the building and provided a space that was used as a community center for recreational activities that served the larger public. The building is intact and in good condition.

The Fuldner Heritage Fund paid for the preparation of this nomination. This endowed fund, created through a generous donation by the Jeffris Family Foundation and administered by the Wisconsin Historical Society, supports the nomination of historically and architecturally significant rural and small-town properties.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
