Lakeview Hospital Listed in the National Register of Historic Places | Wisconsin Historical Society

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of Lakeview Hospital in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, on the National Register of Historic Places. The former hospital located at 1749 Prospect Avenue was added to the National Register on April 18, 2024.

Three osteopaths opened Lakeview Hospital in 1944 within a former single-family residence in the Lower East Side neighborhood. Although the practice of osteopathy was established in the late 1880s, many were skeptical. In 1920, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled osteopaths could receive licenses and individual hospitals slowly opened; however, traditional doctors often did not want to work with osteopaths. By 1944, the first osteopathic hospital already existed in a former residence but was short lived. Lakeview Hospital opened with 17 beds as the second dedicated institution in Milwaukee. Over the next two decades, the hospital grew to accommodate more patients as the practice became more widely accepted. By 1965 it held 50 beds, delivered 7,0000 babies, and performed 15,000 operations. The hospital closed the same year in order to relocate to a larger, more modern hospital outside of the city. Lakeview Hospital stands today as one of the earliest and longest standing osteopathic hospitals to serve the Milwaukee area.
