Pride (Schooner) Shipwreck Listed in the National Register of Historic | Wisconsin Historical Society

DOOR COUNTY, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Pride shipwreck in the National Register of Historic Places on June 4, 2024. The schooner is located in Lake Michigan, in Door County.

The Pride was built by H. D. Root at Black River, Ohio in 1866, and operated in the Great Lakes lumber and bulk cargo trades throughout its career. On August 22, 1898, Pride was capsized by a tornado in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin. The captain’s son and ship’s mate, 24-year-old Thomas Wilson, was killed when the tornado struck. The schooner was righted and given to the salvors in payment for their services. The vessel was then moved to Sturgeon Bay where it awaited repairs. In April 1900, efforts were made to remove the water from its hull and move the vessel to the shipyard for repairs, but Pride was ultimately abandoned.

Although Pride’s hull is broken, with the exception of the ship’s masts, all of its components remain on site. The vessel's hull remains intact up to the turn of the bilge. The hull sides, deck shelf and bulwarks have fallen outward and the centerboard trunk has been displaced to the port side of the keelson. The deck with deck planking and deck beams have lifted up and now sit perpendicular to the hull off the port side of the vessel.

State and federal laws protect this shipwreck. Divers may not remove artifacts or structures when visiting this site. Removing, defacing, displacing, or destroying artifacts or sites is a crime.
