Carleton District #3 School Listed in the State Register of Historic P | Wisconsin Historical Society

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Carleton District #3 School in Milwaukee (Milwaukee County) on the State Register of Historic Places. The school is a notable example of Depression-era public grade school architecture, designed in the Art Deco style. Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer Amy Wyatt presented a certificate to Courtney Ragon.

Carleton School was built as the Town of Granville’s third district school in 1916. The school was expanded and modified five times as Milwaukee’s suburban growth spread to the township northwest of Milwaukee. The school was drastically redesigned in 1940 by Milwaukee-based architect Charles F. Smith with Works Progress Administration (WPA) funds and labor. Its Art Deco style is showcased through masonry details that emphasize vertical lines, low-relief geometric ornamentation, and the pronounced use of glass block.

The design represents the shifting architectural tastes of the 1930s and 1940s. The building displays character-defining elements from several architectural styles, the most prominent being the Art Deco style introduced in the 1940-1941 renovation. Between 1948 and 1956, the Town of Granville was consolidated into the City of Milwaukee, and the Carleton School became a part of the Milwaukee Public School System.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
