Related to the Czechs, but often antagonistic toward them, Slovaks began to trickle into Wisconsin in the early 1880s. The first and most active Slovakian neighborhood was established in Milwaukee's Second Ward in the 1880s. The main rural Slovakian settlement was established in northwestern Dunn County; around 350 Slovaks lived there in the 1960s. Most Slovaks arrived in Wisconsin between 1905 and 1907, and by 1920, 4,808 Slovaks had settled in the state.
