Following the economic success of the Erie Canal, opened in 1825, many early settlers and developers in Wisconsin proposed similar waterways to move produce and goods to market. The two most famous were a canal at the portage between the Fox and Wisconsin rivers (in the town of Portage) and the Milwaukee and Rock River Canal which would have connected Milwaukee to the Mississippi.
