David Adler was a merchant and banker born in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, but he migrated to the U.S. in 1846.

Around 1852 he settled in Milwaukee and opened a retail clothing store which gradually grew into a wholesale business. Adler conducted his firm with various members of his familyand it grew into one of the largest companies of its kind in the area. Adler was one of the organizers of the Wisconsin National Bank, one of the founders and a vice- president of the National Straw Works and a director of the Wisconsin Trust and Security Company.
