Allen, Charles Herman(?) 1828 - 1904 | Wisconsin Historical Society
educator, b. Mansfield, Pa. After several years of teaching, he moved to Wisconsin in 1859 to help conduct a series of teacher training institutes under the direction of Henry Barnard (q.v.). In 1861 he succeeded Barnard as agent for the State Board of Normal Regents. He was superintendent of schools for Madison (1862-1863), and in 1863 became the first professor of normal education at the Univ. of Wisconsin. From 1866 to 1870 he was principal of the Platteville State Normal School. He left Wisconsin in 1872, and from 1873 to 1889 served as principal of the San Jose State Normal School in California. J.
