Early Life

Canute Anderson was a pioneer born in Bergen's Stift, Norway. In 1851, he came to America where he worked on Mississippi river boats and in Wisconsin lumber camps.

Achievements

He was the first permanent white settler in Burnett County and founded the village of Grantsburg in 1865. Anderson attracted many people to this new settlement, helped to promote a branch-line railroad from Rush City, Minnesota and was a community leader in business and politics. He served as clerk of the circuit court, county treasurer and was a member of the state assembly.
