Arnold, Alexander Ahab 1833 - 1915 | Wisconsin Historical Society

politician, livestock breeder, railroad promoter, b. Rhinebeck, N.Y. He graduated from Ohio Law School, Poland, Ohio, moved to Wisconsin in 1857, and settled in Galesville. He became a prominent farmer and livestock breeder, and on his 400-acre farm he was a pioneer in breeding Shorthorn cattle and Berkshire swine. He served with the 30th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (1862-1865). A Democrat until the Civil War, he later switched to the Republican party. Arnold served in the Wisconsin assembly (1871, 1880), and was speaker of the assembly (1880), and was state senator (1877-1878). Active in promoting the Galesville and Mississippi R.R., he was president of the corporation in 1874. He was also a trustee of Galesville Univ. and president of the Bank of Galesville. Biog.
