farmer, Congressman, politician, b. Westmoreland, N.H. He attended the common schools and graduated from Keene (N. H.) Academy. He came to Wisconsin in 1853 and settled near Beloit, where he engaged in farming and breeding of blooded stock. Babbitt was elected an alderman in 1853, was a member of the first city council of Beloit, and served as postmaster of Beloit (1886-1889). A Democrat, he served in Congress (1891-1893), and was secretary of the Wisconsin Agricultural Society (1883-1886). Biog. Dir. Amer. Cong. (1950); Wis.
